Common Weeds of Taroona

Environmental weeds can come from all over the world, but they can even be Australian native plants outside their natural range. Environmental weeds can out-compete natives and reduce biodiversity. In the past 30 years at least 35% of all plants that have become environmental weeds in Tasmania were deliberately introduced as garden plants.

Below you’ll find the weeds that we regularly come up against at our Working Bees here in Taroona. If you have these in your garden or on your verge, you can help TEN and our coastline, by pulling these out before they spread, invade and change our coasts and threaten the survival of native plants and animals.

TEN strongly believes in removal and proper disposal of green and flammable waste. The recommended methods are:

  • Remove using the green waste bin.

  • Remove directly to the tip.

  • Compost soft, non-woody & non-thorny weeds preferably using a hot composting system to kill seeds.
Without adequate heat, seeds and weed fragments can emerge from composting as viable plants.

TEN is hoping to obtain a kiln to enable the community to convert their green waste and flammable fuels to biochar.
